Togashi takes maiden victory in chaotic Mandalika Race 2

Kotaro Togashi took an epic victory in a last lap shootout between home heroes Resky Yusuf and Bintang Pranata to add his name to the Idemitsu FIM Moto4 Asia Cup winners’ list. The Japanese star, who had come close before, bounced back from a double DNF at Motegi to take P4 in Race 1 before battling to victory in a final lap, final corner shuffle. Resky Yusuf took a career-first rostrum in second ahead of Thai star Pacharagorn Thonggerdloung, likewise on the podium for the first time.

Polesitter Pranata converted his pole into the holeshot and despite leading the opening lap, he would soon find himself down as low as sixth place. Assuming the lead, Championship leader Hayato Chishiki had the advantage over the battling pack behind which consisted of Waku Kunitate, Haruki Matsuyama, Yusuf and Muh Badly.

However, the closing stages saw the gloves come off and the chaos ensue with Pranata now back in the lead having taken it on Lap 13, ahead of Togashi and Chishiki. Into the penultimate corner for the penultimate time, Matsuyama got it all wrong, clattering into Chishiki and Kunitate and taking out the top two in the standings, as well as himself in P3 overall. A disaster for the #2, a winner at Motegi last weekend.

On the last lap, Togashi led Pranata and Yusuf but both came through at Turn 10 on the final lap, whilst Yusuf took the lead from Pranata at Turn 13. Pranata got it back on the run through Turn 15 but into the last corner, more drama as Yusuf barrelled through on Pranata, as did Togashi. Togashi was much tidier and got the run on Yusuf to the line to take a first win ahead of Yusuf. Behind, Pranata being pushed wide allowed Thonggerdloung to come through for a first podium, Pranata forced to settle for fourth.
