Matsuyama takes maiden victory after late Race 2 drama

After losing out late on yesterday, Haruki Matsuyama can call himself an FIM Idemitsu Moto4 Asia Cup winner. Although he was pipped to the line by Waku Kunitate, the latter had touched the green track limits on the final lap and that resulted in him being demoted one place. Completing the podium, Indonesian star Muh Badly took a first rostrum of the season.

As lights went out, it was another bright start from Championship leader Hayato Chishiki and Race 1 crasher Kotaro Togashi, the latter keen to redeem himself after his Race 1 error. Soon, there was a group of five consisting of Kunitate, Matsuyama, Chishiki, Badly and Togashi. Behind them, Resky Yusuf had a moment at Turn 5 at the halfway point and dropped him down the order behind Judd Plaisted who was holding sixth.

Onto the last lap and despite leading onto it, Matsuyama got attacked at Turn 1 by Kunitate. However, he responded at Turn 7, only for Kunitate to respond again into Turn 10. It was all coming down to Turn 11, just like in Race 1 and despite going extremely defensive, Kunitate resisted Matsuyama’s attack. Behind, Togashi’s race was all over as he slid off at Turn 11, handing a place to Chishiki in P4. On a run to the line, Kunitate held on ahead of Matsuyama but due to hitting the green earlier on the lap on the exit of Turn 2, he was demoted one place, giving Matsuyama a first career win. Badly was third for a first podium since Motegi in 2025 whilst Chishiki’s fourth place sees his advantage over Kunitate shrink to eight points.

Not long to wait until the next instalment of Moto4 Asia Cup action; Indonesia calls next week for Round 4!
