Double F4 victory revives title hopes for Taito Kato

French F4 normally consists of 3 races per 1 event.

The starting grid for Race 1 is determined by qualifying, the starting grid for Race 2 is determined by reversing the top 10 qualifiers, and the starting grid for Race 3 is determined by the second-best qualifying time.

Taito’s aim this season is to take the crown. As the gap to the leader had increased to 24 points after the Magny-Cours meeting in August, he was determined to tip the balance back in his favour at Dijon.

Taito tried to attack in qualifying with his determination, and he took double Pole Position.

"I liked the Dijon circuit straight away. It's fast, undulating and a lot of fun, with intense sensations due to the speeds reached in the corners and on the straights. Free Practice was invaluable in defining the best set-up for the qualifying session, in which I felt at ease. I made my effort at the ideal moment, with a successful build-up of tyre temperature. This enabled me to take the two pole positions that would have allowed me to start first in Races 1 and 3.”

Determined to win these two races, which were more generous in terms of points than the second, Taito Kato based his tyre strategy on this objective, and it paid off. In the first race, he led from start to finish after an excellent start, relegating the Championship leader to over 3 seconds.

In Race2, Taito started from 10th place. Right after the start, the accident happened in front of Taito, and he moved up to 8th place on the opening lap. However, Taito’s tyres were damaged after the restart. As a result, he finished 11th place.

In Race 3, Taito had kept two fresh tyres, which he used to good effect to win again.

Taito had a good start, and he kept his position. On Lap 4, the safety car was brought on.

"I had to stay focused because the safety car came back on track after a few laps, cancelling out the lead I'd had. When the green flag came back out, I managed to keep my rival behind me, before extending my lead again."

This time, he crossed the finish line with a gap of over four seconds.

"I also set the two fastest laps of the race. Add to that the double pole position, and I scored four more points, and I'm back up to 2nd in the French F4 Championship with a gap of just 6 points. At Dijon, only Race 2 proved difficult. I only finished 11th, but several of my rivals had two new tyres, unlike me.”

The title will be decided at the beginning of October on the Paul Ricard circuit. Taito Kato will be there with the firm intention of becoming the new FFSA Academy champion.
