Honda HRC Tops Qualifying, Advances to Top 10 Trial at Suzuka 8 Hours
On Friday, August 1, the qualifying sessions for the 46th edition of the 2025 FIM Endurance World Championship “Coca-Cola” Suzuka 8 Hours (hereinafter referred to as the Suzuka 8 Hours) took place at Suzuka Circuit (Mie Prefecture), where Honda HRC (Takumi Takahashi, Johann Zarco) secured the top spot and advanced to the Top 10 Trial.

Honda HRC had originally planned to race with a three-rider lineup including Xavi Vierge. However, on Thursday, July 31, the day before qualifying, it was officially announced that they would compete with a two-rider team of just Takahashi and Zarco. During a joint Honda-Yamaha press conference held on the same day, Takahashi commented on Vierge’s withdrawal, saying, “It’s unfortunate, but Zarco and I have experience racing as a duo at the Suzuka 8 Hours, and we’ve been physically prepared for it. Zarco is a MotoGP rider, and his physical strength is well known. We’ll still aim for victory even with just two riders.” Zarco added, “Going from three to two riders changes our strategy. There's a big difference between getting one hour versus two hours of rest, but we’ll manage our pace and do our best.”
The day after the press conference, Friday, August 1, saw a forecasted high of 39°C. The qualifying sessions took place with extreme heat warnings issued.
Free practice was held from 8:30 to 10:30 AM, followed by two qualifying sessions at 12:00 PM and 3:30 PM, with Blue, Yellow, and Red riders each taking 20-minute sessions in that order. In the FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC), qualifying results are determined by the average of the two fastest riders’ best laps per team. Based on Friday’s results, the top 10 teams earn the right to send two riders each to the Top 10 Trial on Saturday, August 2, which determines grid positions 1 through 10. All teams from 11th onward are placed according to their qualifying results.
In free practice, Honda HRC clocked a 2:06.144 to place third. Team ATJ with docomo business (Satoru Iwata, Kouki Suzuki, Takuma Kunimine) placed sixth with a 2:06.280. SDG Team HARC-PRO. Honda (Teppei Nagoe, Yuki Kunii, Keito Abe) placed eighth with 2:06.552. Honda DREAM RT Sakurai Honda (Kazuki Ito, Daijiro Hiura, Joshua Brookes) clocked 2:06.936 for 10th—marking the last entry in the 2:06 range. Teams from 11th onward were all in the 2:07 bracket: Astemo Pro Honda SI Racing (Kohta Nozane, Kohta Arakawa, Ryusei Yamanaka) ranked 13th with 2:07.112, Honda Asia-Dream Racing with Astemo (Nakarin Atiratphuvapat, Azroy Hakeem Anuar, Md Zaqhwan Bin Zaidi) was 14th with 2:07.411, and F.C.C. TSR Honda France (Alan Techer, Corentin Perolari, Taiga Hada) was 16th with 2:07.599. The session was red-flagged four times and ultimately ended under red flag conditions.

He then continued to improve, recording a blazing 2:05.023, nearly breaking into the 2:04s—showcasing his MotoGP-caliber speed. Third place went to Honda DREAM RT Sakurai Honda's Hiura, known as the "Suzuka Meister", who posted a 2:06.273, while Abe of SDG Team HARC-PRO. Honda placed seventh with 2:06.651. The second Yellow Rider session was marred by red flags. Shortly after recording the top time, Yamaha’s Jack Miller crashed hard in Turn 1, sending his bike flipping into the air and triggering a red flag. After the restart, another crash brought out another red flag. Once the session resumed, Zarco of Honda HRC set the fastest time with a scorching 2:04.820. A night session followed the qualifying, where Honda HRC once again recorded the fastest lap.

This morning, I focused on conserving energy during my runs. Takumi (Takahashi) is an efficient rider, so I'm not too worried about him, but since Xavi (Vierge) can't race, efficiency has become crucial. In qualifying, I managed my pace while controlling the times across both sessions. The red flags made it tricky to time my attacks, but I wasn’t fixated on setting the fastest lap. I just wanted to break into the 2:04 range under the high track temperatures—and I think I achieved that goal. More than anything, the race is what matters most, so I want to focus on preparing properly for that.

In qualifying, I went all-out for the first time in a while. Going 100% is physically tougher than maintaining average pace, but it was reassuring to see I could still set solid lap times. That’s encouraging not just for this Suzuka 8 Hours, but also for the second half of the Japan Road Race Championship season. Thanks to the strong laps from Kunii and Abe, we made it into the Top 10. The bike is heading in the right direction, and I want to keep this momentum heading into the race.

I was frustrated not to set a good lap in Q1, so I pushed hard in Q2 to make up for it—but unfortunately, I crashed. It's all hypothetical, but if I’d completed just one more lap, I think I could’ve beaten my time from last year and improved our position, so it’s disappointing. That said, I understand the reason for the crash, and I’ll aim for a better performance in the Top 10 Trial. All three of us have shown consistent pace, and we’re in a good position heading into the race. If we combine our efforts, the results will follow.

I went into qualifying determined to push this bike to the limit. I felt like I was able to ride closer to the bike’s potential than expected, but due to red flags and traffic, I couldn’t string together a clean lap. If I had, I think I could’ve matched Kunii’s time. I have some regrets, but we made it into the Top 10, so I did meet the minimum requirement. Since I’ll be riding in the Top 10 Trial, I’ll be aiming to get into the 2:05 bracket.

I think I did a good job today. In the first qualifying session, I used race tyres and worked on our race pace. The pace wasn’t quite at the level I had expected, but it wasn’t bad overall. On Sunday’s race, I’ll be aiming for a top 8 or top 5 finish.

I was glad to run on new tyres today—the grip felt really good. As always, I focused on maintaining our race pace during qualifying. I tried to stay relaxed and consistent, keeping race conditions in mind. The situation has steadily improved throughout the race week, so I’ll push for a strong result in the final.

The beginning of the week was tough, but after switching to a new bike spec, things felt better today. While there are still some uncertainties, I was able to put together consistent laps in qualifying. We’ll be starting from 14th on the grid, but I’ll focus on maintaining a steady pace and push for a higher finish.

In Q1, the bike felt good, and I managed to clock 2:07.00. That’s half a second faster than last year, but I couldn’t quite get into the 2:06 range like I was aiming for. In Q2, I was on used tyres and focused on checking grip levels, so I couldn’t improve my time. I’ll give it my all to post strong lap times in the race.

Red flags kept coming out, and I couldn’t get a proper run in. Every time I was about to go for a fast lap, another red flag would interrupt my attacks. Overall, though, the team has been working well together, and the bike setup is heading in a good direction. I’ll do my best to deliver a strong result in the race.

Making it into the Top 10 in today's qualifying was very challenging. I pushed at 100%, but there were sectors where I struggled with bike control. We didn’t make it into the Top 10 Trial, but that’s not the end—it’s the race that counts. I’ll focus fully on the final and aim for a higher finish.
