Dramatic victory for Ohta in Fuji
Ohta delivers a dramatic come-from-behind win, with Iwasa also on the podium in 2nd

Subsequent to R6 which took place yesterday, the seventh round of the 2025 Super Formula series was held at Fuji Speedway on July 20 (Sun) in which #6 Kakunoshin Ohta (DOCOMO TEAM DANDELION RACING) achieved an amazing come-from-behind win, and #15 Ayumu Iwasa (TEAM MUGEN) who had finished 3rd in the previous round (R6) made yet another podium finish in 2nd, delivering a 1-2 finish for Honda/M-TEC drivers.
The start of the 41-lap race was delayed for 42-minutes because some restoration work was required for the measuring instruments installed on every car. #6 Ohta made a blistering dash from the 2nd grid, got a jump on the pole starter, #1 Sho Tsuboi (Toyota), and went first into Turn-1. The two car battle continued all through the opening lap wherein Ohta was passed back by Tsuboi at Turn-13 but managed to stay close and waited for the chance for revenge while maintaining a gap to the race leader of less than one second.
The seventh round employed a special race format that avoided the pit window restriction allowing all entrants to make each tyre stop at any time in the race. While some cars came in even right after the opening lap, most of the top runners seemed to have chosen a “waiting game” in order to see how the other cars moved on the strategy. But when a car stranded on the track after losing one of its wheels necessitated the Safety Car (SC) to be deployed on Lap-13, the front group headed for the pit in unison. #15 Iwasa who had already changed his tyres on Lap-7 thus found himself running forefront at this stage of the race. #15 Iwasa stayed on the track, eventually got ahead of #1 Tsuboi who had returned from his own stop with #6 Ohta following immediately behind him, and led the race while being preceded by SC. On Lap-25 when the race was resumed, #15 Iwasa tried to run away from #1 Tsuboi at the restart, but Tsuboi responded it by a fierce chase, and the two cars produced thrilling side-by-side battles.
On the other hand, #6 Ohta was running on fresh tyres and with marginal OTS reserve carefully watched the top two duel unfolding right in front, and decided to wait until they ran through the OTS time. By Lap-31, Ohta had beaten #1 Tsuboi who was seemingly exhausted by the battle for the top spot, and then locked onto #15 Iwasa. #6 Ohta duly overtook #15 Iwasa at Turn-1 on Lap-33, pulled away the field, and went on to run the rest of the 41-lap race at the front. Iwasa crossed the line in 2nd making up the 1-2 finish by Honda/M-TEC users.
#64 Sato launched from 3rd on the grid and ran strongly in the leading group by the time the race going into midterm phase, and took the checkered flag in 5th, however, a 5-sec penalty was imposed after the race for the over-run he committed during the SC period and was relegated 6th. #5 Makino finished 9th and added more points to his total.
At the end of the seventh round, #6 Ohta sits in 2nd overall, 3-points behind the point leader, and #5 Makino placed 3rd with a total of 73-points.

I’ve got frustrated much about R6 and thought R7 would be even more critical for me to run for the title. Actually, I’ve been telling to myself since I left the circuit yesterday, “I've got to win tomorrow no matter what!” I think I did good job both in qualifying and the race, and feel really happy that I could beat Tsuboi fair and square. After the SC period today in the race, I knew Tsuboi would use up OTS in the fight for the lead against Iwasa. So, I focused on saving my tyres and OTS, and waited for the chance to come. It really was a close move, but I could somehow made it by putting down the throttle pedal to the floor. Lastly, I thank Tsuboi for his clean fight.
