After only limited dune riding earlier in the event, stage six from Hail delivered a full test in the sand.  As the longest day of this year’s Dakar, the 915 km route to Riyadh pushed both riders to their physical and mental limits.

Competing in his first Dakar and with just two previous appearances in the World Rally-Raid Championship, Campbell has adapted impressively to the demands of the rally on his Honda CRF450RX RALLY.  Delivering another measured and consistent ride, the 26-year-old secured a solid fourth-place finish on the stage, which was enough to retain the Rally2 overall lead.  With nearly 17 minutes in hand, the pressure will intensify in the second week as his rivals look to close the gap.

Ventura has experienced every aspect of Dakar life during the opening week, from the high of a stage win to the frustration of mechanical issues.  Despite limited experience in the dunes, the Portuguese rider remained positive and continued to enjoy his dream campaign aboard the Honda.  Finishing just 12 seconds behind Campbell on stage six, he climbed further up the overall standings and now sits seventh, edging closer to the fight for fourth place.

Having completed their first full week at the Dakar, the Monster Energy Honda HRC Rally2 riders will take advantage of the rest day to recover and reset ahead of the next phase of the rally.  Action resumes on Sunday with another demanding stage, as they tackle 876 km on the southern route to Wadi Ad Dawasir.

Today, was a sandy stage full of dunes and Preston had a really good result, he rode safely and managed his lead in the overall standings. The first goal was for them to get to the rest day and they did it. Martim finished just 12 seconds behind Preston, so they are both really strong. Because of the problem Martim had on the first day of the marathon stage, he lost important time. However, I’m happy that they have both got to the rest day, it is amazing what they have achieved so far. Now, it is time to rest, to recover, prepare the bikes for the second week and get ready to attack.

It was a super long day, 330 km of special, 900 km in total. It was a full sandy day and I lacked a bit of rhythm on the dunes, which I need to work on. If the coming days have sand again then it gives me more opportunity to get more experience. It was not my best day on the bike to be honest, but I’m feeling good, I’ve completed my first week of the Dakar, so I have to be happy.

The bike was working well so I felt comfortable pushing and gave it all I had. I’m surprised how well it has gone, I’ve made some mistakes but overall I’m super happy to finish the first week and be here in Riyadh. I’ve tried to take it step by step throughout the week and improve on my mistakes and I feel like I’m getting better and happy to be leading the Rally2 class.
