Third row start for Rios in Germany
Honda riders in the mix during Moto3 qualifying at Sachsenring

Today’s Qualifying sessions at Sachsenring saw the Moto3 riders separated by the smallest of margins, with Jesus Rios (Rivacold Snipers Team) proving to be the quickest of the Honda riders.
Casey O’Gorman (SIC58 Squadra Corse) headed straight into the top four places on the timing screens with his first timed lap, while Rivacold Snipers Team’s Nicola Carraro was just outside of these places that would see riders progress to Q2. It didn’t take long though for Leopard Racing’s Adrian Fernandez to make his way in these prize positions. After the second set of flying laps, it was O’Gorman and Fernandez who had done enough to guarantee a place in the upcoming Q2 session, while Leo Rammerstorfer (SIC58 Squadra Corse) was seventh, Carraro was eighth and Guido Pini (Leopard Racing) was ninth.
In the second qualifying session of the day, Fernandez and Rios set the pace early on and were challenging for the front rows, while GRYD Racing’s Eddie O’Shea also demonstrated good pace in the opening minutes of the session. As the minutes ticked by and conditions continued to be favourable, the lap times started to tumble with many riders setting red sector times in the closing stages.
Several Honda riders were among those going quickly, but with lap times separated by the smallest of margins Rios’ final lap proved to be only good enough for eighth place, despite being only 0.398 seconds slower than the pole sitter. Although this does put him in a good place to battle for a podium finish tomorrow, as he will be starting from the middle of third row.
On the row behind him Fernandez will be lining up in the 10th place grid spot, while GRYD Racing’s Joel Kelso will join him in 12th place. Although Veda Pratama was able to improve on the time he set in Practice yesterday, where he topped the session, today his time was only good enough for 13th. Meanwhile O’Gorman was 14th and O’Shea was 16th.
Tomorrow’s 23 lap Moto3 race around the Sachsenring, which is one of six anti-clockwise tracks on the calendar, will get underway at the usual time of 11am local time.
