Honda’s Moto3 riders experience difficult SpanishGP qualifying

Third row start for Fernandez at Jerez

Following a difficult pair of qualifying sessions for Honda’s Moto3 riders, which were punctuated with crashes and yellow flags, Adrian Fernandez ultimately secured a third row start for tomorrow’s race.

The Leopard Racing rider had done enough in practice to head straight to Q2, where he was amongst the fastest riders after his first run. Unfortunately, a crash in the final moments of the session prevented Fernandez from improving his time, but his 1min 44.511secs lap was enough for seventh place.

Honda Team Asia’s Taiyo Furusato also headed straight to Q2 and will be joining Fernandez on the third row of the grid, after posting the ninth fastest time. Luca Lunetta (SIC58 Squadra Corse) had to take the longer route to Q2 and worked hard to recover from a Turn 13 crash in Q1 to post the fastest time of the opening session, but will start the Moto3 race from 13th on the grid.

Lunetta’s team-mate Stefano Nepa ended qualifying in 19th place, after missing out on a Q2 place by the smallest of margins: 0.004 seconds. Lining up directly behind him will be Tatchakorn Buasri (Honda Team Asia), David Almansa (Leopard Racing), Riccardo Rossi (Rivacold Snipers Team) and Adrian Cruces (GRYD – MLav Racing) in 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd places respectively.

Unfortunately, neither Nicola Carraro (Rivacold Snipers Team) nor Eddie O’Shea (GRYD – MLav Racing) were able to set a time in Q1, with both riders also experiencing crashes. Carraro will line up on the grid in 25th place, with O’Shea one place behind in 26th.

Tomorrow’s 19-lap Moto3 race around Circuito de Jerez – Ángel Nieto will get underway at 11am local time.
