Impressive performances from Kelso and Rios in Moto3 Mugello qualifying
Joel Kelso to start Italian race from the front row of the grid

The opening Moto3 qualifying session at Mugello proved to be an unrewarding one for the five Honda riders that took part, with several of them mistiming their pit exit on their final run and miss out on setting one last flying lap.
Leopard Racing’s Guido Pini looked set to challenge for a top-four place, and a spot in Q2, but was one of those riders unable to set a final flying lap. He ended the session in fifth place, while Casey O’Gorman (SIC58 Squadra Corse) was another rider to fall foul of timings and was seventh.
Further back, team-mate Leo Rammerstorfer was tenth, while Nicola Carraro (Rivacold Snipers Team) and Zen Mitani (Honda Team Asia) were 11th and 12th respectively.
The second qualifying session was a better affair, with Jesus Rios (Rivacold Snipers Team) and Adrian Fernandez (Leopard Racing) both challenging for a front row start early in the session. Ultimately it was GRYD – MLav Racing’s Joel Kelso who secured a spot on the front row of the grid, setting the third fastest time.
Ahead of the final runs, Rios was provisionally on the second row of the grid but made the same mistake as Pini in Q1 and did not allow enough time for a second run. Fortunately, he was able to hold on to that grid row and finished the session in fifth place.
Behind Rios, Fernandez, Veda Pratama (Honda Team Asia) and Eddie O’Shea (GRYD – MLav Racing) ended Q2 in ninth, 13th and 14th places respectively.
Tomorrow’s 17-lap Moto3 race around the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello will get underway at the usual time of 11am local time.
