Intense podium battles ultimately end in disappointment for Honda’s Moto3 riders

David Almansa sixth in Assen

An exciting Moto3 race at Assen saw 14 riders fight for the podium positions for the majority of the 19 laps, which included four Honda riders, ultimately ended in disappointment. A crash involving Luca Lunetta, Taiyo Furusato and Adrian Fernandez brought out the red flags with one lap to go, which saw David Almansa classified as finishing sixth.

With tight racing throughout at TT Circuit Assen, the Leopard Racing rider kept himself in contention until the final stages when he was forced wide with three laps to go, which dropped him to 13th. He was able to recover sixth when the red flags came out.

SIC58 Squadra Corse’s Stefano Nepa showed good race craft and was able to find his way through the field from 19th on the grid to finish 13th. Riccardo Rossi (Rivacold Snipers Team) worked hard to make up places, after a poor start saw him drop from 12th to 21st. The Italian was able to recover to 14th.

Unfortunately, the good pace of Adrian Fernandez (Leopard Racing), Taiyo Furusato (Honda Team Asia) and Luca Lunetta (SIC58 Squadra Corse) went unrewarded. The trio had been battling for the podium places and the lead, but were involved in a crash going into the final lap.

There were also crashes for Honda Team Asia’s Tatchakorn Buasri and GRYD – MLav Racing’s Eddie O’Shea on Lap 16, Nicola Carraro (Rivacold Snipers Team) on Lap 13, and O’Shea’s team-mate Leonardo Abruzzo on Lap 8.

The next event for the Moto3 riders will be the Grand Prix of Germany, held at Sachsenring (11 – 13 July).
