Adrian Fernandez claims second in race of attrition at Le Mans

Back-to-back podiums for Fernandez

The Moto3 race at Le Mans turned into a race of survival, where the wet conditions ahead of the race start saw the organisers reduce the race distance to 13 laps and riders battle to get to the chequered flag.

Leopard Racing’s Adrian Fernandez had a poor start from pole position, with multiple wheelies off the line costing him precious places. The Spaniard was quick to recover though and was back up to second place within the opening lap. Fernandez rode an intelligent race, ensuring there was no challenge to his position, and maintained his second place at the chequered flag. This finish made it back-to-back second places for Fernandez and moves him into second place in the championship standings.

Veda Pratama (Honda Team Asia) was another rider to make his way through the field and find good pace in the demanding conditions Le Mans presented, going from 14th on the opening lap to fourth. Although Pratama tried his best to join the fight for the podium places, he was unable to close the gap. Meanwhile Guido Pini (Leopard Racing) did his best to fend off those behind and crossed the line in sixth place.

There were also points secured by GRYD – MLav Racing’s Eddie O’Shea and SIC58 Squadra Corse’s Leo Rammerstorfer, who finished ninth and 14th respectively. Zen Mitani (Honda Team Asia) narrowly missed out on the points, finishing the race in 16th place.

Unfortunately, despite gaining 11 places on the opening lap, Casey O’Gorman (SIC58 Squadra Corse) was unable to realise his potential, crashing out on the second lap. There were also crashes for the Rivacold Snipers pairing of Nicola Carraro and Jesus Rios, and Joel Kelso (GRYD – MLav Racing).

There will be no rest for the lightweight riders as they head straight to Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the Catalan Grand Prix, which will take place on 15-17 May.

I am very happy to come away from today’s race with second position. It is always a difficult task to chase down [Maximo] Quiles for the race win. I tried my best today, but it just wasn’t possible.
