Almansa snatches Moto3 front row start in Assen

David Almansa (Leopard Racing) will start tomorrow’s Grand Prix of the Netherlands from the front row after a remarkable last-lap effort around the TT Circuit Assen.

With a track temperature of 32 degrees Celsius and dry conditions after morning rain at the Dutch venue, Almansa’s effort saw him go third quickest in the afternoon’s Qualifying 2 session, just 0.066seconds from pole position in a typically close Moto3 front row.

Just behind him was Honda Team Asia’s Taiyo Furusato who also saved his best until last to make it two Honda-powered riders in the top four for tomorrow’s round 10 of the Moto3 World Championship. The Japanese rider’s recovery was even more impressive because he made it through from Q1.

The Rivacold Snipers Team duo of Nicola Carraro and Riccardo Rossi set the eleventh and twelfth fastest time respectively to line up on row four, with Leopard Racing’s Adrian Fernandez one spot further back, heading up fow five with thirteenth on the grid.

Finding the going more challenging were the remaining Honda-powered contingent, with Luca Lunetta (SIC58 Squadra Corse) lining up 18th. His teammate Stefano Nepa was stuck in Q1 and ended up 19th fastest, just ahead of Tatchakorn Buasri (Honda Team Asia) in 20th. The GRYD - MLav Racing pairing of Leonardo Abruzzo and Eddie O’Shea line up 24th and 25th respectively.

Tomorrow’s Grand Prix of the Netherlands gets underway 1100h local time for 20 laps of what is sure to be another tooth-and-nail Moto3 encounter.
