Almansa equals his career-best Qualifying result at Silverstone

Tomorrow’s Moto3 race at Silverstone will see David Almansa head up the second row of the grid, after the Leopard Racing rider ended Q2 in fourth place – matching his career best qualifying position.

Almansa knew that he needed to put in a strong ride today, as the Spaniard will have to serve a long lap penalty in tomorrow’s race, but it took until the end of Q2 for him to show his true pace. Despite the rain starting to fall in the final minute of the session, Almansa set his quickest time on his final lap and ended Qualifying in fourth place – equalling his career-best Qualifying result from Argentina earlier this year.

Behind him on the third row, SIC58 Squadra Corse’s Luca Lunetta will be starting from seventh place. Lunetta had shown good speed in the opening half of Q2 but was unable to maintain his position on the second row, while Nicola Carraro (Rivacold Snipers Team), who also made it straight through to Q2, ended the session in 12th place.

Both Riccardo Rossi (Rivacold Snipers Team) and Stefano Nepa (SIC58 Squadra Corse) had to take the long way to Q2 and took part in the opening Qualifying session of the day. The pair will line up on the grid in 17th and 18th place respectively.

It was a difficult Q1 for the Honda Team Asia pairing of Taiyo Furusato and Tatchakorn Buasri, with Furusato narrowly missing out on progressing to Q2. The Japanese rider will start tomorrow’s race from 20th, while Buasri will line up 22nd.

With Adrian Fernandez missing the BritishGP due to injury, Joel Esteban joins Leopard Racing for the weekend and makes his debut on Honda machinery in the category. Having never ridden the NSF250RW in competition before, Esteban used the time to acquaint himself with the bike and will start from 24th place.

GRYD – MLav Racing’s Eddie O’Shea was only able to record one valid flying lap and will line up in 25th place. Joining him as team-mate at the BritishGP, Max Cook has his work cut out adapting to the Moto3 bike, compared to the British Superbike machine he’s used to riding, and will start one place behind O’Shea in 26th.

Tomorrow’s 15-lap Moto3 race at Silverstone, United Kingdom, will take place later than usual at 2.30pm local time.
