【2021 End Of Season Review】Dennis Foggia Wins Five Rounds, Finishes 2021 Second Overall
The 2021 Moto3 championship was contested over 18 rounds. Leopard Racing’s Dennis Foggia rode his Honda NSF250RW to ten podiums including five victories, giving him second place overall in the points ranking.
No-one dominates in the early stages
In the season-opener in Qatar, the top seven riders were separated by 0.965 second. Petronas Sprinta Racing‘s Darryn Binder finished third on his first outing on the NSF250RW. Binder continued in good form in Round 2, crossing the Doha finish line in second place, only 0.039 seconds behind the race winner. Honda Team Asia’s Yuki Kunii was 15th, scoring his first points for the team.
In Round 3, Portugal, Dennis Foggia, yet to score championship points this season, started from second on the grid to take his first podium of the season, a repeat of his second place finish in Portugal last year. Rivacold Snipers Team’s Andrea Migno finished third, giving Honda two podiums from two front row starts. In Round 4, Spain, Indonesian Racing Gresini Moto3‘s Jeremy Alcoba, who had disappointing races in Doha and Progutal despite being on the front row, qualified on the Spanish round’s front row and was third across the finish line. Kunii was 14th, scoring his second points of the season.
Foggia chases points-leader
In Round 5, France, Honda Team Asia’s Andi Farid Izdihar finished 14th, scoring his first points of the season. In the following round in Italy, Foggia shined. Starting from fourth on the grid, Foggia gave Honda its first win of the season, by 0.036 seconds. Indonesian Racing Gresini Moto3’s Gabriel Rodrigo was third, his first podium finish on the NSF250RW.
In Round 7, the Catalan GP, Alcoba qualified second, and after one of the season’s most exciting battles, won by a 0.015 second margin. From Round 8 in Germany to Round 16, the Emilia Romagna GP, Foggia had a string of success. Despite finishing outside of the points in Round 10, the Styrian GP, he was on the podium eight times including four wins. Honda Team Asia’s Kunii was eighth in Round 10, setting a personal best record. In Round 15, the Grand Prix of the Americas, Petronas Sprinta Racing’s John McPhee finished third from a 10th grid start, his first podium of the season.
Foggia pushes hard
In Round 17, the Algarve GP, Foggia crashes and his ranking for the season is fixed at second place. Migno was second in this race, his third podium for the season. In the season-finale in Valencia, Foggia’s Leopard Racing teammate Xavier Artigas, made a thrilling comeback to win his first race of the season.
Honda Team Asia’s Kunii closed his season in 25th place. Izdihar was 29th overall, scoring championship points in four rounds. Takuma Matsuyama raced in three rounds as a wildcard entry. Mario Aji also raced as a wildcard.
