Difficult Task in Sepang: Chantra Starts 15th and Aji 21st for the Malaysian GP Race

IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia riders have finished Qualifying Day at the Sepang International Circuit for the 19th round of the Moto2 World Championship.

Difficult Task in Sepang: Chantra Starts 15th and Aji 21st for the Malaysian GP Race

As last week in Buriram, Somkiat Chantra advanced to Q2 after leading the Q1 session. However, Q2 proved challenging due to high competition levels and tight times between riders. Heavy traffic made it difficult for Chantra to secure an ideal lap, resulting in a 15th-place start for tomorrow. Meanwhile, Mario Aji showed lap time improvements, but a mistake on his final lap affected his timing, placing him 21st on the grid.

We’ve just completed qualifying in Malaysia, where times between riders were incredibly tight. The level of competition was high, and even minor differences had a significant impact. Mario Aji showed progress in his riding, but a small mistake on his last lap cost him valuable tenths. On the positive side, he’s taking steps in the right direction and is showing improvement.
Somkiat Chantra he started the day so good been the fastest in Q1, but in the Qualifying 2 he had some traffic in front and that makes him lost some valuable time to do the best lap. I think we can improve for tomorrow, the tight time differences indicate that both riders have the potential to regain positions tomorrow. I’m confident they can make a strong comeback in the race.

Today we completed the final practice and qualifying sessions for the Malaysian GP. In practice, I pushed hard from the start, improving my time over yesterday, but it wasn’t quite enough, we still wanted more. In Qualifying 1 things went better, and I managed to finish the fastest.
I tried to push form the start of the Q2 but there was a lot of traffic then I comeback to the box to change the tires and then I tried to make a good lap time but was difficult and at the end we start tomorrow’s race from P15. So now the only thing I can do is push as much as I can tomorrow from the beginning and try to gain as much positions as possible.

It was a challenging qualifying day here in Sepang. Although we’re not far off the Top 10 in terms of time, we couldn’t secure a spot in Q2. My riding style still needs improvement, though the bike setup is good. There’s still plenty of room for progress, and despite today’s challenges, we’re on an upward trajectory.
I’ll give my best in tomorrow’s race. We’re working well, and I feel we’re moving in the right direction, so we need to trust the process. I’m grateful to my team for their efforts, and I’m looking forward to giving my all on the track during the race.
